STEMpathize: Women in Astronomy speakers, 5 p.m. March 19
This event will feature two accomplished guest speakers who have made significant strides in astronomy and space science. Students will get the chance to hear these individuals share their personal journeys, discuss challenges in the field, and listen to their valuable insights for students pursuing STEM careers:

Pranvera Hyseni is a Ph.D. student in Earth and Planetary Science at UC Santa Cruz and the founder of Astronomy Outreach of Kosovo. Her groundbreaking work in astronomy education has impacted over 25,000 individuals annually, and she has earned recognition as one of the most influential women in Kosovo. Hyseni’s research focuses on understanding the history of formation of asteroids, comets, and meteorites. She also made history in 2022 by establishing the first International Astronomy and Planetary Sciences Convention in Kosovo.

Dr. Elinor Gates is a staff astronomer at Lick Observatory specializing in laser guide star adaptive optics. She has an extensive background in astrophysics and astronomy, having worked with prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Dr. Gates’s research focuses on quasars, their host galaxies, and black hole mass measurement. Asteroid (2650) Elinor was named in her honor.
